Baseball Drops Season Opener at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. -- The George Washington baseball team opened its 2017 season with the first in a four-game series vs. Auburn Friday night at Plainsman Park and fell to the host Tigers, 9-0.
Auburn used four pitchers and a flawless defensive effort to record the shutout, with starting pitcher Keegan Thompson (1-0) picking up the win after scattering four hits in six innings of work.
Making a start in his first collegiate appearance, Colonials freshman pitcher Elliott Raimo (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs in 2 2/3 innings work. Junior Tyler Swiggart followed with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless work, striking out two and allowing just one hit, but Auburn was able to put the game away with a four-run seventh inning.
Shortstop Nate Fassnacht led the GW offense, which had five hits on the afternoon, with a double, while Auburn first baseman Daniel Robert had a 4-for-4 day with two runs and a RBI.
The series resumes with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
