Volleyball Downs George Mason for Third Straight Win

WASHINGTON - The George Washington volleyball team evened its Atlantic 10 conference record at 6-6 when it won its third straight game on Friday night with a 3-1 win over George Mason at the Charles E. Smith Center.

Key Stats
- GW improved its all-time record over George Mason to 41-9 and also gave the GW Athletic Department a 5-1 lead in the year-long Revolutionary Rivalry.
- Four players posted double-doubles in the match, the most in a single match this season.
- Senior Aaliya Davidson tallied her third straight double-double, and her sixth of the season, with 13 kills and 15 digs. Classmate Kristel Moor added her second double-double effort in the past three matches with 13 kills and a career-high 16 digs.
- Graduate student Stacey Benton facilitated the attack with 24 assists and added 10 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.
- Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Sydney Welch continued her outstanding rookie season by tallying the rare libero double-double. She finished with a team-high 21 digs along with 10 assists.
- There were no lead changes in the match as each time a team won a set they did so without trailing.
- The three wins in a row is the longest win streak of the season.
How It Happened:
Set 1: GW 25, George Mason 19
- GW controlled the first set, scoring the first point of the match and never looking back.
- The Colonials swung .267 in the frame while holding George Mason to .128.
- GW tallied 4.0 team blocks, led by three block assists from junior Alexis Lete.
- Mason cut an early deficit to just one point at 6-5 but the Colonials erupted on an 8-2 run to pull ahead, 14-7.
- The Colonials remained ahead and led by as many as eight points before settling on the final six-point margin.
Set 2: GW 25, George Mason 18
- GW was on fire throughout the second set, swinging a blistering .414 with just two attack errors.
- The teams traded points in the early going until an 8-8 tie, but GW seized the momentum by using a 7-2 run to move ahead, 15-10.
- Mason failed to get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Colonials cruised to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 win.
Set 3: George Mason 25, GW 23
- Mason opened on a 6-3 run but the Colonials battled back to tie the score at 9-9.
- The Patriots scored five straight points to pull ahead, 14-9, but the Colonials were able to keep it close until getting within one point of the lead at 19-18.
- Mason stayed out in front and turned away a late rally to win the set.
Set 4: GW 25, George Mason 21
- GW started hot in the fourth set, opening on a 9-3 run and leading by as many as eight points.
- The Colonials had a 22-15 lead but the Patriots scored five straight points to battle back to two points at 22-20.
- A kill by Iott and an attack error put the Colonials at match point. Mason delayed the inevitable on a GW service error before senior Kelsey Clark put down the match-clinching point for the 25-21 win.
Look Ahead:
- GW closes the regular season next weekend when it hosts Dayton (Fri, 4 p.m.) and Saint Louis (Sat., 7 p.m.) at the Smith Center.
- The top six teams in the standings at the end of the regular season will advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship.
