GW Volleyball Swept at Saint Louis

SAINT LOUIS - Junior Aaliya Davidson led the attack with 10 kills, but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to contain Saint Louis and NCAA kills leader Danielle Rygelski in a 3-0 loss at Chaifetz Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 23-25, 27-29, 17-25.
Rygelski, the NCAA leader in total kills (325) led all players with 24 winners to pace Saint Louis (7-10, 2-0 A-10).
GW (6-9, 0-2 A-10) got eight kills apiece from seniors Chidima Osuchukwu and Loren Williams. Osuchukwu added a match-high five blocks (one solo, four assists) while Williams contributed four digs and two block assists.
The Colonials saw a late rally cut short in a 25-23 first-set loss. Saint Louis held a late 22-17 lead before a kill by Osuchukwu sparked a 5-1 run which cut the deficit to one at 23-22. The teams traded points to 24-23, but the Billikens clinched the set on a sideout kill by Rygelski.
The second set was a battle that extended into extra points, with the teams fighting through 10 ties and eight lead changes, before Saint Louis came away with a 29-27 win. The Colonials were serving for the set at 24-22, but Saint Louis rallied with three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. A kill by Williams tied the score at 25-25 but Rygelski put the Billikens ahead by one after a kill.
Consecutive kills by Davidson put the Colonials back on top at 27-26, but Saint Louis scored three straight points to steal the frame with a 29-27 win.
Saint Louis opened the decisive third set on a 4-0 run and never trailed en route to a match-clinching 25-17 win.
GW returns to the Charles E. Smith Center for its first home conference matches of the season next weekend. The Colonials will face Fordham on Friday night at 7 p.m. before welcoming Rhode Island on Saturday evening at 7p.m.
