GW Volleyball Topped by Fordham, 3-0

WASHINGTON - Junior Aaliya Davidson totaled double-digit kills for the third consecutive match to open Atlantic 10 Conference play but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to pick up a win on Friday night as Fordham earned a 3-0 sweep at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-27, 25-22, 25-23.
GW (6-10, 0-3 A-10), which has lost six matches in a row, will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when it hosts Rhode Island, 3-0 winners over George Mason on Friday, at 7:00 p.m. at the Smith Center.
The Colonials narrowly lost all three sets by a combined seven points and held late leads in the first two frames, but were unable to hold down Fordham (9-9, 2-1 A-10) in the loss.
The first set featured 10 ties and four lead changes before Fordham rallied late for a 27-25 win. The Rams held an early 16-14 lead but GW used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 21-18. The Colonials won two of the next three points to pull ahead 23-19, but Fordham answered by closing on a 8-2 run to earn a 27-25 win.
GW got off to a hot start in the second set, moving out to a 10-4 lead. Fordham began to chip away at the deficit but GW was able to maintain a cushion all the way until holding an 18-13 lead. The Rams answered with an 6-0 run to pull ahead by one at 19-18. Two quick points by the Colonials put them back on top at 20-19 but the Rams unleashed a set-closing 6-2 run to pull ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-22 win.
GW attempted a late rally in the third set when faced with a 22-18 deficit. The Colonials used a 5-2 spurt to get within one point of the lead Fordham got the match-clinching point out of a time out to seal the win.
Davidson finished with 12 kills to pace GW's attack and has now accumulated 38 winners in the past three outings. Junior Chidima Osuchukwu finished with a match-high five blocks (one solo, four assists) in addition to eight kills (.368).
Freshman Jordan Young tied her season high with six kills while senior Emily Clemens finished with 22 assists, seven digs and two service aces.
