GW Volleyball Falls at Dayton in A-10 Opener

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Aaliya Davidson hit .419 with a team-best 16 kills but it was not enough as the George Washington volleyball team fell in its Atlantic 10 opener, 3-1, at Dayton on Friday night at Frericks Center. Set scores were 19-25, 25-27, 25-19, 18-25.
Senior Chidima Osuchukwu joined Davidson in double figures with 10 kills (.364) in addition to six block assists. GW (6-8, 0-1 A-10) swung .248 (47k-18e-117a) in the match while out blocking the Flyers, 12.0-7.5.
Dayton (14-1, 1-0 A-10) hit .274 for the night (62k-25e-135a) and had four players record at least 10 kills in the win. Jessica Sloan led the way with 18 kills.
The Flyers emerged from a close first set, outlasting the Colonials across 14 ties and nine lead changes, to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win. The teams had battled to a tie at 17-17 but Dayton closed on an 8-2 run to seal the frame.
GW had its most efficient attack of the night in outhitting the Flyers in the second set, but Dayton used another late run to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 win. GW committed just three attack errors in the second, swinging a combined .400 (15k-3e-30a) while Dayton hit at a .394 (17k-4e-33a) clip.
The Colonials held a late 19-16 lead but Dayton battled back to take a 24-23 lead on an 8-4 run. GW staved off set point twice on kills by Williams and Davidson, but the Flyers got kills for the final two points and the 27-25 win.
The Colonials used a substantial run midway through the third set to cut the deficit to 2-1 with a 25-19 win. Dayton opened a 10-8 lead to begin the frame but GW scored four of the next six points to tie the score at 12-12. From there, the Colonials scored six consecutive points to begin a 10-4 run and open up a 22-16 lead. A kill by Davidson got GW to set point at 24-18 and a service error moments later clinched the win.
Dayton opened the decisive fourth set on a 5-0 run and never trailed en route to a match-clinching 25-18 win. GW hit an efficient .310 (12k-3e-29a) in the final set but could not offset a robust attack by Dayton (.452, 18k-4e-31a).
Senior Emily Clemens notched the 12th double-double of her career with 21 assists and 11 digs.
Senior Maddie Brown also contributed double-digit digs with 13.
GW concludes its A-10 opening road trip on Sunday when it faces Saint Louis at 2:00 p.m. ET at Chaifetz Pavillion.
