WASHINGTON - George Washington baseball head coach Gregg Ritchie has announced the addition of Rick Oliveri to his staff as assistant coach and pitching coach.
Oliveri comes to GW following a successful five-year stint at Monmouth University.
"We are excited to welcome Rick to the GW Baseball Family," said Head Coach Gregg Ritchie. "His track record of experience and success is going to play a big role in the development and maturation of our pitching staff this season. He will also be counted on in the recruiting process to identify future Colonials who will help the continued climb of GW Baseball on a regional and national level. His care for people and his passion are two exceptional strengths of his that will impart major impact on the staff."
As the pitching coach at Monmouth, Oliveri played a key role in the development of the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Pitcher of the Year Ricky Dennis. Dennis led the MAAC with eight wins and posted a 3.78 ERA in 14 starts, with four complete games, two shutouts and a 56:21 strikeout to walk ratio in 78.2 innings.
He also saw one of his pitchers get drafted last spring as left-handed pitcher Anthony Ciaverlla was taken in the 24th round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the MLB First-Year Player Draft.
"I am excited to be a part of George Washington, a world-renowned university in a fantastic location with a rich baseball history," said Oliveri. "I am grateful for the opportunity Coach Ritchie has given me to join a program with such an outstanding tradition."
Prior to his tenure at Monmouth, Oliveri was an assistant coach at Radford University. Primarily working with the catchers, Oliveri helped decrease passed balls, pitchers' wild pitches and errors by Highlander backstops over a two-year period.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Oliveri was a three-year starter and two-year team captain at the University of Buffalo. He earned his degree in business administration.
