SAN DIEGO -- Racing for the first time in the College Sailing / Gill Coed Nationals, GW is in 17th place after the first day of finals.
The Colonials, who qualified for the finals after two days of semifinal racing, will conclude the season on Friday.
"There were definitely some tricky aspects to the day with some current on the race course, but it was a fair day of racing and very competitive," said head coach John Pearce. "It is a pleasure to be out there in the national finals against the best sailors in the country, and it was tight racing throughout. We made some small mistakes at times but did a lot of things well, and definitely recognize at this level of competition if you make small mistakes you're going to slip back 5-to-10 spots. Many of the finishes were just a 10-to-20 second difference from the first to last boat."
Yale leads the competition after one day, followed by Georgetown, Boston College, Coast Guard and South Florida. Racing is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. PT on Friday. A live stream can be seen here, and live scoring can be followed here.
