SAN DIEGO -- For the second consecutive year, the GW Sailing team has advanced to the finals at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) / Sperry Women's Nationals.
GW finished fifth among 18 teams in the Eastern Division of the semifinals on Wednesday, securing one of 18 spots in the finals. The top nine teams from both the Eastern and Western Division move on to the final rounds, which get underway Thursday and conclude Friday.
As they did Tuesday, the Colonials put together another strong day of results, with the climax coming when India Johnstone and Emma Mendenhall captured a victory in B Division's Race 10. GW finished strong, with a fourth- and second-place finish in the final two races of the day in B Division.
"We were very pleased with our result today," said head coach John Pearce. "To finish fifth in our semifinal and be the top MAISA team in qualifying for the finals is extremely rewarding after winning both MAISA Women's Championships this season. India and Emma's race win was the highlight of the day."
The Colonials now move on hoping to improve upon their 13th-place finish a year ago. Scores can be followed at http://scores.collegesailing.org/s16/sperry-sailing-women-nationals/, with racing getting underway at 10:30 a.m. PT.
"Moving onto the Finals for the second straight year, we plan to be more aggressive and really go after the moment sailing amongst the best teams in the country."
