ORLANDO, Fla. -- The GW golf team finished fourth at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship as Christian Cichan and Logan Lowe recorded top-15 finishes on Sunday at Grand Cypress Golf Club.
The Colonials shot 909 (302-299-308) to improve five spots from their ninth-place finish in 2015, with Cichan finishing T-7th and Lowe 13th. On a vote by league coaches, Lowe was named to the All-Conference team - the only freshman to earn that distinction on the 10-man squad.
VCU took the team title with an 18-over 882 (298-292-292) while Richmond was second at 889 (294-298-297) and Dayton was third with an 896 (294-295-307). Matt Ball of VCU won the individual title with a 4-under 212 (73-70-69).
"While I'm happy we moved up, our goal was to be in contention coming down the stretch so that's a little tough," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "There were some bright spots and some good play throughout the week. We need to use this disappointment and frustration we have as motivation heading towards next year because every single one of these guys is back and we could have played a lot better in some spots and been right there in contention."
Cichan shot a 7-over 223 on the weekend (73-73-77) while Lowe carded an 8-over 224 (73-72-79). Sophomore Vince Palazzolo and junior Lucas Farmer tied for the best round by a Colonial on Sunday at 4-over 76, as Palazzolo finished 26th (78-76-76=230) and Farmer finished T-27th (78-78-76=232). Sophomore Jack Porcelli shot 246 (81-83-82) to finish T-48th.
"I think we had some good play going and all the sudden we had a couple of hiccups and the momentum kind of stopped," Scheinost said of Sunday's round. "That's one thing we have to work on heading into next year, is how to handle those moments better, and the only way to do it is to put yourself in those situations."
GW finishes the season with a 297.19 team scoring average, which is the second best mark in school history since stroke play began, behind a 296.94 in 2005-06.
