GW Sailing Completes Two Weekend Regattas

The George Washington Sailing team completed a pair of events over the weekend as it turns its attention toward the stretch run of the season, with just three weekends of competition remaining.
The Colonials had hoped for a top four finish at the MAISA Team Race Championships, which would have given the program its first trip to team race nationals. Unsailable conditions on Saturday forced the entirety of the event to be held Sunday and GW, which is ranked No. 14 nationally in coed, was unable to claim the automatic qualifier, finishing eighth.
"We just couldn't get in a groove on Sunday," said head coach John Pearce. "We lost to some teams that we've beaten all year, which was frustrating. We feel like we've made a lot of progress in our team racing program this year but that wasn't reflected in the results this time unfortunately."
On the women's side, the No. 12 Colonials secured a ninth place finish among 18 teams at the Emily Wick Women's Regatta. India Johnstone, Kelly Weigold and Emma Mendenhall led the effort with a seventh place finish in B Division while Hannah McNomee and Madison Oleson were 11th in A Division.
"We had a little bit better of a result - not as strong as the previous week's performance at the Dellenbaugh, but still a reasonable indication of where we are going into the MAISA Women's Championship in two weeks," said Pearce.
GW has a big weekend of racing ahead with the Navy Spring Regatta, Owen Trophy and Thompson Trophy, before competing at the MAISA Women's Championship in two weeks.
"This is the final countdown now with three weekends to go," said Pearce. "This weekend we have three big interconference regattas and we're looking to do our final ramp up in fleet racing."
