WASHINGTON -- Junior Michaela Lynch scored a career-high four goals and sophomore goalkeeper Adele Wise recorded a career-best 15 saves, but the George Washington lacrosse team fell to No. 19 Massachusetts, 15-9, on Sunday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW held an early 3-1 lead after scoring three straight goals over a four-minute span. Lynch tallied the Colonials' first two goals of the game off assists from junior Bailey Forcier, and Forcier netted one of her own at the 20:56 mark.
Winners of 40 straight Atlantic 10 games and six straight A-10 titles, the Minutewomen responded with six in a row before senior Olivia Boudreau found the back of the net on a free-position shot with 19 seconds left. One more UMass goal just before the break gave the visitors an 8-4 halftime advantage.
UMass opened the second stanza with a 5-1 run, but Lynch again sparked a 3-0 GW spurt with back-to-back goals, and senior Julia Lawson's second goal of the game at the 7:58 mark made it 13-8. The Minutewomen scored twice more before sophomore Camaryn Kerns' first career goal with five seconds left made the final score 15-9.
Lynch added a pair of ground balls to her four goals, while Forcier tallied three points (1g, 2a), two ground balls and three draw controls. Grad student Jacqui Stevens matched her career bests with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and senior Becca Taub had three ground balls.
Wise is the fourth GW goalie to record at least 15 saves in a game and first since Liz Hoffman had 17 at James Madison on Feb. 26, 2011. Wise added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Erika Eipp tallied a game-high eight points on three goals and five assists for UMass, while Nicole Troost had six points on five goals and an assist and Hannah Murphy won 12 draw controls. Sam Walters and Aileen Kelly split time in goal for the Minutewomen and combined for five saves.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they visit A-10 rival Richmond at 4 p.m.
