NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sophomore Sarah Costlow earned Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week and junior Monica Macchiarulo grabbed Co-Player of the Week honors after leading the George Washington softball team to a perfect 5-0 mark at home to begin a seven-game homestand last week.
Costlow posted a stellar week in the circle, earning three victories without allowing an earned run in 19.0 innings of work. On Wednesday, the sophomore tossed five shutout innings, allowing just three hits without a walk to lead GW to a 5-0 win over Lafayette. On Friday, the systems engineering major hurled a complete game one-hit gem against La Salle in the first conference game of the season. The sophomore issued just one walk as the Colonials took a 6-0 triumph. On Saturday, Costlow again got the start against La Salle and went the distance to help GW take a 6-4 win over the Explorers. All four of La Salle's runs in the contest were unearned.
In her three starts, Costlow walked only two batters and struck out eight to come away with a perfect 3-0 mark on the week.
Costlow was also named ECAC Division I Pitcher of the Week.
Macchiarulo batted a hot .562 (9-for-16) over the course of five games, slugging .750 on the week with the help of a double and a triple. The junior proved to be an unstoppable force on the bases, successfully swiping six bases without being caught. The exercise science major scored in each of GW's five contests and drove in one run. On Saturday against La Salle, Macchiarulo tied a program record with four hits in a single game, marking a career-best 4-for-4 effort.
Macchiarulo also posted a strong defensive performance in the outfield, tallying 16 putouts without committing an error during the week.
Cosltow grabs her second career A-10 weekly honor after earning her first Pitcher of the Week nod a year ago. The Co-Player of the Week award is the first of Macchiarulo's career and the squad's first Player of the Week recognition since Victoria Valos ('15) in 2014.
