OPENING DRAW: After an 11-day break from competition, the GW Lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday with its first-ever trip to UMBC.
LAST TIME OUT: GW dropped its season opener at Delaware, 17-7, on Feb. 16. Senior Gabbi Hull and junior Bailey Forcier each scored twice, while junior Cassidy Shollenberger (1g, 1a) and senior Olivia Boudreau (2a) also had two points apiece. The Colonials trailed by just two, 8-6, at halftime, but the Blue Hens scored the final eight goals of the game to pull away.
COACH COYNE'S TAKE: "I was very pleased with how well the team performed in the first half. We demonstrated a tremendous competitive spirit against a top team. We executed on both ends of the field and played with a presence, never backing down."
HELPING HAND: Boudreau is tied for sixth in the Atlantic 10 in assists per game (2.0). Last season, the team captain dished out 19 helpers, ranking sixth in the conference. The senior now boasts 34 assists in her career, which ranks 10th on GW's all-time list.
PICKING UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF: Hull finished the 2015 campaign on a high note, scoring five goals over the final two games of the season, including a hat trick at George Mason. The senior picked up where she left off in the 2016 opener with two goals against Delaware.
DANDY DEBUT: Freshman Bridget Cassidy earned the start in her collegiate debut and was impressive, tallying a team-high three ground balls and two caused turnovers to go with a pair of draw controls. She is tied for fourth in the A-10 in ground balls per game (3.0) and tied for second in caused turnovers per contest (2.0).
BETWEEN THE PIPES: Junior goalie Erin Long and sophomore keeper Adele Wise combined for 10 saves against Delaware, and the Colonials currently rank second in the A-10 in saves per game (10.0). Wise stopped six shots in the second half and is tied for fourth in the conference with 6.0 saves per game, while Long is tied for seventh (4.0).
SCOUTING UMBC: After a season-opening loss at Towson, UMBC (2-1) has posted some big offensive numbers in wins over VCU (20-5) and American (18-7) and currently leads the America East in goals (14.0), assists (6.33) and draw controls (14.0) per game. Carolyn Jamison leads UMBC and the America East with 10 goals this season, and she is tied with Sam Nolan (8g, 5a) for the team and league lead with 13 points apiece. In addition, Caitlin Miller leads the conference with 10 draw controls. Ashley Peacock has started all three games in goal for the Retrievers and boasts a 9.60 goals-against average and .478 save percentage to lead UMBC to a league-best 8.67 goals allowed per game.
COACH COYNE ON THE RETRIEVERS: "We are expecting a very intense, competitive game with UMBC. They're a physical team, so we need to be ready to handle that aspect and not let it take us out of our game. Defensively, our goal is to stay disciplined if UMBC has long possessions on attack and not give up easy goals. On the attacking end, we will look to create scoring opportunities by moving the ball quickly and catching their defense out of position."
SERIES HISTORY: Despite just 40 miles separating the two campuses, GW and UMBC will meet for the first time on Saturday.
ON TAP: The Colonials will continue their season-opening run of five straight road games at Navy on Wednesday.
