GW Baseball Hosts Delaware State in Tuesday's Home Opener

LEADING OFF: The George Washington baseball team will host Delaware State in its home opener on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
LAST TIME OUT: GW opened the season on the road over the weekend, taking one of three games at North Florida in Jacksonville. The Colonials outlasted the Ospreys, 7-6, in game one before falling in the middle game by a score of 2-0. UNF won the series with a come-from-behind 10-7 victory on Sunday.
HOT START: GW's offense came to play in its season-opening series. The Colonials batted .296 as a team and combined to register eight extra-base hits and 14 runs across the three games.
Juniors Andrew Selby and Kevin Mahala paced the offense through the weekend. Selby hit safely in all three games and batted .455 (5-of-11) with one double and one RBI, while Mahala hit .385 (5-of-13) with two doubles, one triple, one home run and five RBIs.
HOME SWEET HOME: GW went 20-10 in regular-season games at Tucker Field last season. In three seasons under head coach Gregg Ritchie, the Colonials have won 39 games at their home facility.
SWEENEY'S DEBUT: Junior southpaw Shane Sweeney will make his GW debut on Tuesday afternoon when he takes the mound for the Colonials. He spent last season at the Community College of Baltimore County at Catonsville, where he threw 39.0 innings with 36 strikeouts.
LAST TIME VS. THE HORNETS: GW leads the all-time series, 10-8-1, but Delaware State escaped with a 1-0 win last season at Tucker Field on the strength of a complete game shutout by Terry Godfrey.
