NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The George Washington men's golf team was picked to finish seventh in the 2016 Champions Poll which was released Friday.
The Colonials received 47 votes in the poll which was conducted among the Atlantic 10's head golf coaches. VCU, the two-time defending champion, received all 11 first place votes and 121 points overall while Richmond was picked second and Rhode Island third. Dayton and Davidson rounded out the top five, while George Mason was sixth.
GW was picked in front of La Salle, Saint Joseph's, St. Bonaventure and Fordham. The Colonials are set to open the spring season on Monday at the Atlantic 10 Match Play Championships which begin Monday on the Tour Course at Weston Hills Country Club in Weston, Fla. Eight of the 11 A-10 teams will participate in the event.
The Colonials will look for their young core to build on a solid fall that saw sophomore Christian Cichan lead GW in scoring average (73.42) while freshman Logan Lowe (73.83) was not far behind. In addition to Cichan and Lowe, junior Lucas Farmer (75.17) and sophomore Vince Palazzolo (76.25) played in all five events for GW last semester.
