Volleyball Falls at Rhode Island, 3-1

KINGSTON, R.I. - Senior Chidima Osuchukwu totaled 10 block assists in a single match for the third time in her career, and also added a solo rejection, but it was not enough as the George Washington volleyball team fell at Rhode Island, 3-1, at Keaney Gymnasium. Set scores were 20-25, 23-25, 25-11, 20-25.
Osuchukwu was a force at the net with her 11 total blocks, contributing to GW's season-high total of 21.0 team blocks. She added seven kills, three service aces and two digs.
GW also had strong blocking performances from sophomore Alexis Lete and senior Emily Clemens. Lete posted career-high totals of two solo blocks and seven assists while Clemens totaled a solo rejection along with five block assists.
Rhode Island opened the match with a 25-20 win in the first set. The teams were tied early at 2-2 but the Rams opened a 6-3 lead on a 4-1 run and never trailed again to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
GW jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the second set but Rhode Island responded with a 7-3 spurt to seize an 8-6 lead before extending the advantage to 13-8. The Colonials battled back to within two points at 14-12 with a 4-1 run. The Rams scored the next two points to take a 16-12 lead but GW answered with four straight points to knot the score at 16-16. The teams stayed within two points of each other until three straight points by Rhode Island opened a 23-19 lead. The Colonials would not go quietly, using a 4-1 spurt to get within one point at 24-23, but Rhode Island used a kill out of a timeout to win the set, 25-23.
The Colonials swung .562 with just one attack error in a dominant 25-11 third-set win. GW's defense totaled six of its team blocks in the frame while limiting Rhode Island to a negative attack percentage (7k-9e-22a).
The Rams clinched the match with a dominant run in the fourth set. With the match tied 16-16, Rhode Island scored four straight points to ignite a match-clinching 9-4 run to take a 25-20 win.
Junior Aaliya Davidson led the Colonials with 10 kills and added four digs, three block assists and a pair of service aces. Junior Kristel Moor put down nine errorless winners (.474) along with four block assists.
GW also totaled a season-high with 11 service aces on Friday.
GW concludes its road trip on Sunday at Fordham. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
