TIPPING OFF: The GW men's basketball team will look to get back to its winning ways as it hits the road for its first true road game of the season as it takes on Harvard, Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Colonials, who started the season 3-0, have lost three straight despite holding a lead in each game, including halftime advantages vs. Georgia and Penn State.
LAST TIME OUT: Despite playing without injured starter Yuta Watanabe, and having the GW reserves outscoring their counterparts, 26-11, the Colonials fell to Penn State, 74-68, on Saturday afternoon. GW got seven first half points apiece from a pair of bench players in sophomore Jordan Roland and freshman Collin Smith, while Matt Hart and Jaren Sina both chipped in five in the opening stanza, to give the Colonials a 32-23 edge at the intermission. Penn State, however, shot 50 percent in the second half in putting 51 points on the scoreboard to take the six-point victory.
ABOUT HARVARD: The Crimson are 1-3 with a win over Fisher College and losses to Stanford, Holy Cross and Massachusetts. Head coach Tommy Amaker is in his 10th season with Harvard and has a roster that includes seven freshmen and six sophomores among the 20-man team. One of those newcomers, freshman forward Seth Towns, leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg), while classmate Henry Welsh is averaging a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game. Senior guard Siyani Chambers is chipping in 8.7 ppg and a team-best 15 assists.
SERIES HISTORY: Harvard leads the series, 3-1, including a 2-0 mark in Cambridge. The teams split a home-and-home in 2008-09 and 2009-10 before Harvard swept the two game series played in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
STREAKING: Despite a scoreless first half vs. Penn State, graduate student Tyler Cavanaugh extended his streak of games scoring in double figures to 44 with a 15-point second half. Cavanaugh leads the Colonials in scoring (18.2 pg), rebounding (8.2 pg) and assists (2.7 pg).
HARVARD HOMECOMING: Patrick Steeves makes his return to his alma mater on Tuesday, just more than six months after graduating with a degree in applied mathematics. Steeves, who was limited to one year on the court for the Crimson due to injuries, has played in all six games for the Colonials including a start vs. Penn State. The Montreal native is working towards his masters in business analytics at GW.
