ST MARY'S CITY, Md. -- The GW sailing team took a third-place finish at the War Memorial last weekend to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Championships in two weeks.
Sailing in a field of 18 teams, which included seven ranked squads, the No. 16 Colonials were edged out by Kings Point and No. 1 Georgetown. No. 12 Hobart & William Smith and No. 10 Navy rounded out the top five.
Teams were greeted by ideal sailing conditions on St. Mary's River on Saturday, when 21 races were completed, while Sunday's conditions allowed for just two races. Senior Brendan Shanahan and freshman Andreea Ranney-Pace led the Colonials to a second-place finish in A Division, securing their position with seven top-3 finishes in 11 races.
In B Division, juniors Kai Friesecke and Miranda Bakos sailed GW to fourth place, finishing in the top third of the field in six of 11 races.
"Our team sailed really well," said head coach Billy Martin. "In particular Brendan and Andreea, who finished second in their division and put together a really impressive score line, finishing in the top-3 in seven of 11 races. Kai and Miranda were also really consistent in B Division, only finishing out of the top half in one race. It was a really exciting weekend and we're looking forward to ACCs."
The Colonials have just two weekends of racing left in the semester, with the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship set for this coming weekend in Galveston, Texas, in advance of the Atlantic Coast Championships, Nov. 12-13.
