GW Volleyball Drops Loyola (Md.), 3-1

WASHINGTON - Junior Chidima Osuchukwu and sophomore Aaliya Davidson each posted 14 kills as the George Washington volleyball team defeated Loyola (Md.), 3-1, on Tuesday night at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21.
GW (10-5) has now won nine of its last 11 matches heading into its Atlantic 10 conference opener against George Mason on Friday night at the Smith Center.
Osuchukwu, the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week, put down 14 kills against just three errors for a .478 attack percentage to pace three players in double-digit kills. Davidson added 14 kills, nine digs and two block assists.
Freshman Hanna Justesen had a breakout performance, totaling a season-high 12 kills along with nine digs, two blocks (one solo, one assist) and two service aces.
GW swung .400 (18k-4e-35a) in the first set en route to a 25-20 victory. Trailing 12-9 midway through the frame, the Colonials erupted on a 10-3 run to build a 19-15 lead and force a Loyola (5-10) timeout. The Greyhounds were able to pull within one point of the lead out of the break at 21-20, but GW rattled off four straight points to clinch the set.
The Colonials hit .385 (14k-4e-26a) in the second set while converting 76-percent (15-of-21) of their sideout point opportunities en route to a 25-21 win. GW led for the majority of the frame and closed on a 6-3 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Loyola swung .393 (14k-3e-28a), forced eight attack errors and led wire-to-wire en route to a 25-18 win in the third set to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Colonials responded in the fourth set by committing just three attack errors and swinging .323 (13k-3e-31a) en route to a match-clinching 25-21 win.
Senior Jordan Timmer tallied 37 assists on the evening along with eight digs and one block assist. Classmate Maggie Skejelbred posted a team-high four block assists in addition to five kills.
Senior Maddy Doyle paced the back line with 15 digs in addition to seven assists and two service aces.
As a team, GW held advantages in digs (48-44), team blocks (6-3), assists (49-44), kills (54-48) and attack percentage (.276-.226).
GW renews the Revolutionary Rivalry against George Mason on Friday night at Smith Center. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
