GW Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Panther Invitational

PITTSBURGH - The George Washington volleyball team extended its win streak to three matches with a 3-0 sweep of Bowling Green before falling to Pittsburgh, 3-1, in the nightcap on the final day of the Panther Invitational on Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House.
GW (9-5) downed Bowling Green in the first match of the day by scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-16. In the win, the Colonials extended their consecutive sets streak to nine.
Junior Chidima Osuchukwu led all players with 13 kills against just three errors for a .500 attack percentage. The reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week also contributed two block assists to lead the Colonials.
Freshman Kelsey Clark added 11 kills and three digs while junior Loren Williams posted 11 winners (.286) and three block assists.
GW opened the first set on an 8-4 run and extended its advantage to 19-14 later in the frame. Bowling Green (4-9) battled back to within one point of the lead at 20-19, but the Colonials closed on a 5-1 run to take the first set, 25-20.
The Colonials' momentum carried into the second set, opening the frame on an 8-3 run. The Falcons answered by rallying to tie the score at 15-15, but GW scored four of the next five points to build a 19-16 advantage. GW kept a one-point lead until 21-20 and then scored three straight points to get to set point at 24-20. Bowling Green answered with three in a row to pull within one, but the Colonials' defense forced an attack error to clinch the set, 25-23, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
GW's best set of the match was the third as the Colonials hit .350 and committed just two attack errors en route to a 25-16 win. The teams exchanged runs in the early going until Bowling Green built a one-point lead at 7-6. The Colonials retaliated with a 9-3 run to pull ahead, 15-10, and GW remained ahead the rest of the way to clinch the match with a 25-16 win.
Senior Jordan Timmer tallied 40 assists and seven digs to facilitate the attack while senior Maddy Doyle (11) and sophomore Maddie Brown (10) each finished with double-digit digs.
GW's win streak came to an end in a 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh in the nightcap. Set scores were 25-27, 9-25, 25-23, 16-25.
The Colonials were victimized by a season-high 38 attack errors and hit a season-low .029 (42k-38e-139a) swing percentage in the match.
GW led for most of the first set, building a 14-8 lead early and extending the advantage to 20-13 before Pittsburgh (10-2) rallied to take a one-point lead at 24-23.
The Colonials tied the score on a kill by Osuchukwu and got to set point on an attack error, but the Panthers clinched the set with three straight points to take a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials committed 14 attack errors in a 25-9 second-set loss but rebounded with a 25-23 win in the third set to make the score 2-1.
The Panthers sprinted out to a 15-4 lead in the fourth set en route to a 25-16 win to clinch the match.
Osuchukwu led GW with 12 kills and eight blocks (four solo, four assists) while Clark and senior Maggie Skjelbred added nine kills apiece.
Osuchukwu and Doyle were each named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of the weekend. Osuchukwu totaled 37 kills and 18 blocks (six solo, 12 assists) over the three matches while Doyle tallied 49 digs for an average of 4.9 per set.
GW returns home to the Charles E. Smith Center to host Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
