WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team's record-setting season came to an end on Friday evening as the Colonials fell, 2-1, to Davidson in the bracket's final four at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (32-22) held a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning before a late two-run home run allowed Davidson (28-21) to take a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning.
Freshman Brady Renner was outstanding on the mound for the Colonials, holding Davidson scoreless across seven innings before yielding the go-ahead home run in the eighth. Renner took the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Renner found trouble in the first two innings but worked out of the jam each time with crafty pitching. In the first, a leadoff walk made it to third base but an inning-ending double play halted the threat. In the second, a leadoff double advanced to third on a wild pitch before Renner struck out the side to end the inning.
Senior Ryan Xepoleas got the Colonials first hit of the day on a bunt single to lead off the third and advanced to second on a groundout before scoring on a RBI single by sophomore Joey Bartosic.
Renner settled down to work a 1-2-3 bottom half of the third inning and retired seven batters in a row until a one-out error put a runner aboard in the fourth. Renner responded with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Davidson got base runners aboard in each of the next three innings but Renner continually turned away the Wildcats unscathed.
In the bottom of the eighth, Davidson's Ryan Lowe reached on a sharply hit ground ball that ricocheted off of first base. Lee Miller followed by lifting a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
The Colonials got two runners aboard in the top of the ninth with two outs but were unable to tie the game.
Bartosic finished 2-for-4 for his team-leading 22nd multiple-hit game of the season. Freshman Robbie Metz (2-for-4) and Xepoleas (2-for-4, one run) also finished with multiple hits.
The Colonials conclude the season with an overall record of 32-22, just the 12th time in program history that the team has achieved 30 wins. The two wins in the A-10 Championship mark the first time since 2006 that a GW team has won multiple postseason games.
Additionally, GW's 7-3 start to the season was the best 10-game start since 1984. The Colonials also notched the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 2008 with a 12-1 drubbing of then-No. 16 Maryland on April 8.
Bartosic and sophomore Eddie Muhl each tallied record-setting performances during the season. Bartosic's 24-game hit streak, which spanned two seasons, is the longest in program history.
Muhl concluded the season with 17 saves, both a GW and Atlantic 10 single-season record. His 18 career saves also make him GW's career-saves leader.
