WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team concluded its Atlantic 10 Conference schedule with a 6-3 loss in 10 innings to Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
Saint Louis (33-18, 14-7 A-10) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after taking advantage of a fielding miscue, but the Colonials responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Sophomore Colin Gibbons-Fly drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI triple to the gap in left-center field by sophomore Kevin Mahala to tie the score at 1-1. Senior Ryan Xepoleas then earned an RBI with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to put GW ahead, 2-1.
GW starter Jacob Williams escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fourth to preserve the lead before the Colonials added a run in bottom half of the inning.
Gibbons-Fly led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a base hit by Mahala. During a steal attempt, the Saint Louis pitcher threw the ball away, allowing Gibbons-Fly to easily score and extend the lead to 3-1.
Williams allowed a one-out single in the top of the fifth but negated the threat with an inning-ending double play.
The Billikens pulled within one run of the lead against Williams in the seventh to chase him from the game. Williams allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in the start. Freshman Robbie Metz entered in relief, but a throwing error in the field allowed Saint Louis to tie the score at 3-3.
Metz allowed just one hit over the next two innings and the Colonials had an opportunity to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, but a pair of hard-hit balls stranded a runner on second base.
Saint Louis plated three runs in the top half of the 10th to take a 6-3 lead and held on to clinch the win and the series.
Mahala finished 2-for-3 with one triple, one run and one RBI while Gibbons-Fly (2-for-2, two runs, one walk) also had a multiple hit game.
Sophomore Andrew Selby extended his reached-base streak to 27 consecutive games with a base hit in the sixth inning.
GW concludes conference play with a 13-10 record and will host William & Mary for a three-game non-conference series late next week. The teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday followed by a single game on Friday.
