GW Baseball Crushes Coppin State, 11-2

WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team scored nine runs across the sixth and seventh innings en route to an 11-2 victory over Coppin State on Wednesday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
GW (27-14) totaled 15 hits in the contest, the second-highest total this season, with six players recording multiple hits. The Colonials improve to 18-6 at home with the victory and have now won 10 of their last 12 games at Tucker Field.
Sophomore Brandon Ritchie earned the win after pitching five innings of no-hit relief with one walk and one strikeout. Junior Randy Dalrymple got the start for the Colonials and allowed one unearned run on five hits in three innings of work with no walks and three strikeouts.
GW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Robbie Metz led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Cody Bryant and scored on a RBI single by freshman Brandon Chapman.
Coppin State (3-35-2) tied the score with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning before the Colonials moved ahead for good in the fifth. Junior Matthieu Robert walked, move to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on an infield single by freshman Mark Osis and scored on a fielder's choice RBI by Metz to break the tie and give the Colonials a 2-1 lead.
GW broke the game open by scoring six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Andrew Selby hit a one-out triple to start the barrage, his team-leading sixth three-bagger of the season. After junior Andy Young was hit by a pitch with two outs, Robert lined a RBI double to right center field to put the Colonials on top, 3-1. Osis followed with a RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1 ahead. A two-run single by Metz then put the Colonials ahead, 6-1, before sophomore Eli Kashi's base hit extended the inning. Sophomore Bobby Campbell then laced a two-run double to the gap in right center field to push the advantage to 8-1.
The hit parade continued into the seventh inning as the Colonials piled on three more runs on three hits. Xepoleas led off with a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a double by Young. Metz was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases and then Kashi delivered a RBI single for the Colonials' ninth run of the day. Gibbons-Fly added a RBI when he was hit by pitch ahead of Chapman's RBI single, which extended the Colonials' lead to 11-1.
The Eagles added a run in the top of the ninth before sophomore Zane Schreiber retired the side to clinch the win.
Metz finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases to pace the offense from the leadoff position, while Campbell (one double, two RBIs) and Chapman (2-for-4, two RBIs) added multiple RBIs.
In addition to Metz and Chapman, the Colonials had four other players record multiple hits with Kashi (2-for-4, one run, one walk, one RBI), Young (2-for-2, two runs), Selby (2-for-5, one triple, one run) and Osis (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) playing critical roles in the victory.
The Colonials travel north to face Rhode Island for a three-game Atlantic 10 series this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
