WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team will resume Atlantic 10 Conference play when it visits George Mason for a three-game, Revolutionary Rivalry series beginning on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Spuhler Field in Fairfax, Virginia.
GW (24-12, 10-4 A-10) scored six unanswered runs over the final two innings to rally for an 8-4 victory over Towson on Tuesday afternoon in Towson, Maryland. Five players recorded multiple hits in the win, led by sophomore Joey Bartosic who went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Sophomore Eli Kashi connected on his first career home run and finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.
The Colonials have won 14 of their last 18 games and are currently the only team in the Atlantic 10 with 10 conference wins.
Bartosic continues to lead the Colonials in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.340), on-base percentage (.395), runs (30), hits (50), multiple-hit games (16) and stolen bases (17).
Sophomore Andrew Selby paces the Colonials with 22 RBIs, 18 extra-base hits and five triples while batting .299.
GW's pitching staff ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and 41st in NCAA Division I with a team ERA of 3.25. The Colonials' pitchers are aided by the top-ranked defense in the Atlantic 10 and 10th-best defense in the nation (.979).
Sophomore Eddie Muhl, the NCAA leader with 14 saves, was named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List on Tuesday afternoon. The award is annually given to the top relief pitcher in Division I. Muhl has posted a 0.47 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 18 appearances this season. Already GW's single-season saves record holder, Muhl needs just two saves to tie Bryan Beggs for the career saves record.
Freshman Robbie Metz ranks fourth in the Atlantic 10 and leads GW's starting pitchers with a 2.20 ERA. He has posted a 3-2 record across eight starts and has registered 24 strikeouts in 45.0 innings.
Junior Bobby LeWarne paces the Colonials with six victories on the mound. He has posted a 3.90 ERA and a team-best 46 strikeouts in nine starts.
George Mason enters this weekend's series with a 16-21-1 overall record and a 5-7 mark in Atlantic 10 games. The Patriots have defeated Saint Joseph's, Richmond, Fordham and VCU (two times) this season.
George Mason ranks third in the conference with a .290 team batting average but ranks 12th with a staff ERA of 5.32.
The winner of the three game-series will earn a point towards the Revolutionary Rivalry standings. GW enters the weekend with a four-point lead (9.5-5.5). With four events remaining, GW's lacrosse team will have a chance to clinch the Tri-Cornered Hat trophy with a win over George Mason on Friday afternoon.
