RESULTS: President's Trophy Women's | Navy Spring Regatta
WASHINGTON - Freshman India Johnstone and sophomore Gabriella Malek won their division and the Colonials combined to beat seven nationally ranked teams to highlight GW sailing's performances at a pair of challenging interconference regattas this weekend.
"We had a really solid weekend at some very competitive events with excellent performances from four individuals," said Head Coach John Pearce. "India and Gabby had a super strong performance and it was definitely exciting for them to win A Division, and is a good indicator as we head into MAISA Women's Championship next weekend."
Johnstone and Malek totaled a regatta-best 46 points to take first place in A Division and help GW to a fifth-place finish at the 14-team President's Trophy Women's regatta on the Charles River in Boston. The duo finished in the top half of the fleet in all 12 races, including a pair of race victories, to better Yale's runner-up A Division boat by 11 points.
Yale, the top ranked women's team in the nation, won the event with 114 points, while Tufts (124), No. 3 Bowdoin (133) and No. 4 Brown (134) narrowly edged out No. 15 GW (136) in the top five. The Colonials placed ahead of four ranked teams in No. 14 Vermont (sixth), No. 7 Rhode Island (10th), No. 12 Boston College (11th) and No. 13 MIT (13th).
Senior Meagan Murphy, junior Hannah McNomee and freshmen Miranda Bakos and Kia Olsson finished in 10th place in B Division with 90 points.
At the Navy Spring Regatta on Annapolis Harbor and the Severn River, GW used a fifth-place B Division performance from freshmen Kai Friesecke and Belle Strachan to beat out three nationally ranked teams and post a seventh-place finish against a 20-team fleet.
Friesecke and Strachan finished in the top five in 6-of-15 races en route to 100 points in B Division and GW totaled 268 points to edge nationally ranked coed teams No. 6 St. Mary's, No. 9 Dartmouth and No. 14 Fordham. No. 5 Georgetown claimed the regatta title with 146 points, beating out No. 2 Charleston, No. 4 Stanford, SUNY Maritime, No. 10 Navy and No. 15 Old Dominion.
GW's A Division duo of freshmen Roger Dorr and Shira Golub won Race 6 and placed 10th with 168 points.
GW is slated to compete in three regattas the weekend of April 25-26, headlined by the MAISA Women's Championship in St. Mary's City, Maryland. The Colonials will also race in the three division Admiral's Cup in Kings Point, New York, and at Georgetown's Arrigan Memorial Regatta on the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia.
