ARLINGTON, Va. - Junior Bobby LeWarne worked seven innings of one-run ball and retired the last 12 batters he faced as the George Washington baseball team (6-2) defeated Manhattan (1-8), 3-1, in game one of its three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Tucker Field at Barcroft Park.
LeWarne earned his third win of the season after holding the Jaspers to one run on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. The Des Moines, Iowa, native did not allow a base runner after the third inning before being lifted to start the eighth inning.
GW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore Andrew Selby hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a RBI groundout by sophomore Kevin Mahala.
Manhattan responded with a run in the top of the third inning but it would be the last time a player reached base as LeWarne cruised through the next four innings.
The Colonials moved ahead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Mahala led off by slicing a double down the left field line and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Robbie Metz then delivered an infield, RBI single to give GW a 2-1 lead.
LeWarne struck out the side in the top of the seventh before the Colonials added an insurance run in the bottom half.
Mahala singled with one out and then sophomore Joey Bartosic delivered a RBI single to plate the run and put the Colonials on top, 3-1. With the hit, Bartosic extended his program-record hit streak to 22 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the Atlantic 10.
Senior Craig LeJeune worked a 1-2-3 eighth with a pair of strikeouts before sophomore Eddie Muhl earned his third save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. GW's three pitchers combined to retire the final 18 batters they faced in order. Additionally, Muhl extended his scoreless innings streak to 18.2.
Mahala finished 2-of-3 with two runs and one RBI while Metz extended his hit streak to eight consecutive games by going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
GW and Manhattan will play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Tucker Field.
