RESULTS: Admiral Moore Team Race | Hanbury Cup
WASHINGTON - GW sailing posted a pair of middle-of-the-fleet finishes at the Admiral Moore Team Race and Hanbury Cup regattas this past weekend.
At the Admiral Moore Team Race hosted by SUNY Maritime on New York's East River, GW finished in seventh place out of 10 teams with an 8-10 head-to-head record.
The Colonials were the only team to sweep both races from host and regatta champion SUNY Maritime (15-3), but split series against Coast Guard (9-9), Dartmouth (10-8), Merchant Marine (4-14), Michigan (5-13), Pennsylvania (6-12) and Roger Williams (11-7), and dropped both races to UC Santa Barbara (8-10) and Hobart and William Smith (14-4).
GW's trio of boats were manned by freshmen Roger Dorr and Shira Golub, sophomore Brendan Shanahan and freshman Miranda Bakos, and freshmen Kai Friesecke, Belle Strachan and Sam White.
At Christopher Newport's inaugural Hanbury Cup on the James River, the Colonials' two teams placed fourth and sixth against an eight-boat fleet.
GW's Colonials boats totaled 244 points over 16 races to finish in fourth place, 27 points behind regatta winner Eckerd, just 12 shy of runner-up Virginia and six back of host CNU. GW's Buff and Blue boats placed sixth with 292 points.
The Colonials A Division duo of sophomores Daniel DelBello and Gabriella Malek won three races and recorded five runner-up finishes for the regatta's third-best boat with 92 points. The Buff and Blue A Division of sophomore Madison Oleson and freshman Kia Olsson placed seventh with 140 points, while the B Division boats comprised of freshman Taylor Brimberg and senior Madeline Taggart, and sophomore Colin Kennedy and rookie Matt Homa both totaled 152 points and placed ninth and 10th, respectively.
"Certainly disappointed with both of the finishes, we could have done better at both regattas," said Head Coach John Pearce. "We'll move forward to next weekend's important events with a national women's regatta and the MAISA Team Race Challenge, at which we're really focused on a top-two finish. We're going to need a good week of practice to get ready."
GW will again be in action at a pair of regattas next weekend with the Women's Dellenbaugh Trophy in Providence, Rhode Island, and the MAISA Team Race Challenge in Kings Point, New York. The Colonials will need a top-two finish at the Challenge to qualify for the MAISA Team Race Championship the following weekend in Kings Point.
