WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit with six unanswered runs and held off a late rally to earn a 6-5 victory over Saint Bonventure in its Atlantic 10 home opener on Friday afternoon at Tucker Field.
Junior Bobby LeWarne tallied his team-leading fourth victory of the season by throwing seven solid innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts to improve to 4-2 on the season.
Saint Bonaventure (10-3-1, 0-1 A-10) raced out to a 2-0 lead with runs in each of the first two innings before GW's offense came alive in the middle innings.
GW (11-8, 2-1 A-10) got one run back in the bottom of the second when senior Ryan Xepoleas hit a two-out double and scored on a dropped fly ball by the Bonnies' left fielder.
LeWarne worked around a pair of two-out hits to retire the side in the top of the third inning and the Colonials seized the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame.
A one-out double by sophomore Andrew Selby put runners on second and third with two outs, then freshman Brandon Chapman followed with a two-run single to put the Colonials on top, 3-2. Senior Ryan Xepoleas singled to extend the inning before sophomore Kevin Mahala blasted a two-run double off of the wall in left field to extend the lead to 5-2.
Chapman doubled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on a RBI single by sophomore Joey Bartosic to add a key insurance run, pushing the lead to 6-2.
LeWarne escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and allowed a run in the seventh before turning the ball over to the bullpen to start the eighth inning.
Saint Bonaventure used a two-run home run to pull within one run of the lead in the eighth inning, but freshman Tyler Swiggart retired the side to preserve the lead.
Sophomore Eddie Muhl worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save and clinch the win for the Colonials.
Bartosic finished 4-for-5 with one RBI to tally his ninth multiple-hit game and GW's first four-hit game of the season.
Chapman finished 2-for-4 with one double, two runs and two RBIs, while Mahala finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Xepoleas (2-for-4, one run, one walk) and sophomore Bobby Campbell (2-for-4, one run, one RBI) also finished with multiple hits for the Colonials.
GW and Saint Bonaventure will play the middle game of the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Tucker Field.
