WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team will host Howard at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus on Thursday afternoon as the Colonials open their home season at 3 p.m.
GW (12-8) looks to extend its seven-game win streak after a perfect 7-0 spring break week of competition. Howard (5-16) has won its last three games and will take on Elizabeth City State University in the finale of a three-game series on Wednesday before facing the Colonials.
Freshman Sarah Costlow is the reigning Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the week after amassing a 6-0 record in the circle with a trio of wins over Delaware State, one at Norfolk State and two against Lafayette, while sophomore Paige Kovalsky (3-0, 2.80 ERA) rounded out the week with a triumph over Norfolk State.
Senior Samantha Dos Santos led GW offensively, batting .611 (11-18) on the week with six RBIs and her second home run of the season, while junior Carlee Gray legged out the first two triples of her career in a 9-for-20 (.450) week. On the season, Dos Santos (.404) leads all hitters in average while Gray (.400) is close behind.
As a team, the Buff and Blue are ranked ninth in the nation in stolen bases per game with 2.40 swipes per contest. Individually, sophomore Megan Linn's 13 stolen bases leads GW and places her 33rd in the nation.
Al'Asia Davis leads the Bison with a .424 average and a team-high nine doubles, while Jasmine Gammons (.245) leads the squad with 13 RBIs. Davis sits atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in two-baggers per game (.40) and is 42nd in the country in that category.
The Colonials lead the all-time series with the Bison, 3-1, most recently splitting a doubleheader a year ago.
