WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team is slated to play five games in three days in Orlando, Florida at the Citrus Classic held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex over the weekend. The original schedule of play, which pit GW against Virginia four times and Morgan State once, has been changed and the Colonials will now face five different opponents.
The Colonials (1-5) open on Friday in a 1:15 p.m. doubleheader against Arkansas (3-7) and Marist (0-0). GW will take on Virginia (3-6) at 11 a.m. and Jacksonville State (6-4) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, before wrapping up the weekend in a 12:15 p.m. contest with Morgan State (0-1).
The Razorbacks enter the tournament in the midst of a four-game losing streak, most recently dropping a 7-3 decision to Chattanooga. Friday will mark the first meeting between Arkansas and GW.
Marist opens its 2015 season in Orlando, after inclement weather cancelled their previously scheduled games. The Red Foxes own a 2-0 edge all-time against the Colonials, but the two will meet for the first time since 2005 on Friday.
The Cavaliers fell to North Carolina Central and Nebraska-Omaha in their last two contests, while Jacksonville State rides a two-game win streak after defeating North Florida and Virginia Tech last weekend. GW will look for its first-ever win over Virginia, and will take on the Gamecocks for the first time.
Morgan State opened their season last weekend with a 17-11 loss to North Carolina A&T State in a weather-shortened tournament. The Bears and Colonials will meet for the first time after last year's scheduled matchup was cancelled.
Sophomore Megan Linn, junior Morgan Matetic and senior Samantha Dos Santos are all tied with a team-high three RBIs each through six games for GW. Linn, the Colonials' 2014 batting leader, claims one of two team round-trippers, while hitting .286 (6-for-21) with two doubles. Senior Victoria Valos has the other homer, batting .333 (3-for-9) in four games played. Sophomore Paige Kovalsky has had a strong start to the season, going 3-for-7 while appearing in four games.
In the circle, freshman Sarah Costlow has started four out of GW's first six games, tossing 19.1 innings, while junior Meghan Rico has appeared in three games, throwing 11.1 innings and holding opposing batters to a team-low .171 average.
