WASHINGTON – George Washington head baseball coach Gregg Ritchie announced on Tuesday that Brendan Monaghan has joined the Colonials' coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Monaghan will replace Dustin Johnson, who recently left to take a professional scouting position with the San Diego Padres, as GW's pitching coach.
"Brendan is considered one of the top young coaches in college baseball at any level," said Coach Ritchie. "He is a fantastic addition to this staff and is 'all-in' in taking GW baseball to the next level. We are extremely lucky to have someone of his caliber, character, baseball knowledge and relentless dedication."
Monaghan served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at UMass Lowell for the past two seasons. He played a key role in the transition of the River Hawks' program from Division II to Division I. The team won 37 games during Monaghan's tenure, including 20 wins in the program's first two seasons as part of the America East Conference.
Prior to his time at UMass Lowell, Monaghan was a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, St. John's, for three seasons. He helped the Red Storm to 99 wins over three seasons, including the 2012 Big East championship, two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NCAA Super Regional appearance in 2012.
A 2007 graduate of St. John's, Monaghan helped the Red Storm to three NCAA Tournament appearances and two Big East regular-season championships. He was an All-Big East selection as a senior and posted career numbers of 20 doubles, 59 RBIs and a .307 batting average across 125 games.
After graduation, Monaghan had a four-year professional career, including three years within the Baltimore Orioles organization with the Bluefield Orioles (Rookie, Appalachian League) and Delmarva Shorebirds (Class A, South Atlantic League). He was also an All-Star for the Long Island Ducks (Independent, Atlantic League) in 2010.
