GW Volleyball Falls in Five Sets at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio - Junior Chidima Osuchukwu posted her third career double-double with 18 kills and a career-high 14 total blocks, but it was not enough as the George Washington volleyball team fell in five sets at first-place Dayton on Friday night at Frericks Center. Set scores were 25-16, 17-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-17.
GW (18-9, 7-4 A-10) threatened to end the nations's longest win streak, for both overall and conference matches, but Dayton (21-5, 12-0 A-10) rallied to avoid the upset.
The Colonials took the first set in convincing fashion, swinging .364 with just four errors en route to a 25-16 win. GW started on a 4-0 run before extending its lead to 14-5 and held off Dayton down the stretch for a 25-16 win.
The Flyers responded in the second set by forcing nine GW attack errors and tied the match with a 25-21 win, but the Colonials answered by putting Dayton in a 2-1 hole with a 25-21, third-set triumph.
GW and Dayton battled through 15 ties and six lead changes in a wild fourth set. The Colonials held a late lead at 23-22 but Dayton used a 5-2 run down the stretch to win, 27-25, and force a decisive fifth set.
The Colonials trailed 6-4 early in the fifth set but rolled off six straight points to take a commanding 10-6 lead. The Flyers answered with a 7-2 run to move ahead 13-12. A kill by Hanna Justesen knotted the score at 13-13. GW faced match point at 14-13, but swung the momentum with two quick points and served for the mach at 15-14. The Flyers then rattled off three straight points to steal the win.
Osuchukwu paced three Colonials in double-digit kills with 18 winners while posting one solo block and a career-high 13 block assists. Sophomore Aaliya Davidon added a double-double of 16 kills and 15 digs while senior Maggie Skjelbred contributed 12 kills and six blocks.
Timmer posted her 10th double-double of the season with 51 assists and 15 digs.
Senior Maddy Doyle, the A-10 digs leader, passed 17 digs along with three assists.
GW concludes the road portion of its Atlantic 10 scheduled at Saint Louis on Sunday afternoon. First serve from Chaifetz Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.
