NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- George Washington men's basketball senior Patricio Garino has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Garino averaged 18.0 points per game on 61.3 percent shooting (19-31), including 57.1 percent (4-7) from 3-point range, in leading the Colonials to a 3-0 record on the week.
The swingman from Argentina led GW to its first win over a top-6 ranked team since Feb. 24, 1996, as the Colonials defeated No. 6 Virginia on Monday night. In front of a sold-out Charles E. Smith Center, Garino scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. He thwarted rallies by Virginia on a couple occasions, as the Cavaliers took a one-point lead twice in the second half only to see Garino respond to give GW the lead back. After UVA edged ahead 40-39, he knocked down a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, and when the Cavaliers went ahead 55-54, he answered with a layup and drew a foul, knocking down a free throw to complete a three-point play.
In a road win at South Florida on Thursday, Garino scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting while adding two steals and a block. He capped the week with a third straight 18-point performance, making 6-of-11 shots and helping GW to a 92-81 victory over Army on Sunday night.
This marks the first Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award for Garino, and the first for a GW player since Kevin Larsen picked up the honor on Dec. 29, 2014.
For his play, Garino also received Colonials of the Week honors and was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com.
