GW Volleyball Sweeps VCU in A-10 Quarterfinals

WASHINGTON - Junior Chidima Osuchukwu hit .636 with a match-high 16 kills as the No. 4 seed George Washington Volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over No. 5 VCU in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship on Friday evening at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.
GW (21-10) advances to face No. 1 seed Dayton in Saturday's semifinals at 5:00 p.m. in a rematch of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship match, which the Flyers won, 3-1, in Dayton, Ohio.
Osuchukwu paced a Colonials' attack that committed just four attack errors across the first two sets en route to a .333 attack percentage (47k-11e-108a) for the match. Sophomore Aaliya Davidson also tallied double-digit kills for the Colonials with 13 kills (.297).
The Colonials hit .351 (16k-3e-37a) in the first set en route to a 25-16 win. GW opened the match on a 10-2 run and never looked back. The defense limited VCU (14-17) to a .146 (13k-7e-41a) in the frame while holding advantages in in blocks (2.0-0.0) and digs (19-17).
The momentum carried into the second set as GW opened on a 7-3 run. VCU pulled even at 9-9 before the Colonials erupted on a 5-0 run to take a 14-9 lead and force a timeout. Out of the stoppage GW continued to apply pressure, scoring six of the next eight points to extend the lead to 20-12 and force another Rams timeout. The Colonials were never threatened the rest of the way and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-16 win.
The third set was the closest of the match with nine ties and three lead changes but the Colonials pulled away down the stretch for a match-clinching 25-18 win. Davidson tallied six of her 13 kills in the decisive third set.
Senior Jordan Timmer tallied her 12th double-double of the season with 40 assists and 12 digs.
Three players finished with double-digit digs, paced by Timmer's 12. Senior Maddy Doyle, an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection, passed 11 digs in addition to three assists while freshman Hanna Justesen added 10 digs.
Kelsey Clark, the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Year, played a flawless match with six errorless kills (.750). Senior Maggie Skjelbred also had an efficient evening with eight kills (.227) and five digs.
