WASHINGTON - The No. 4 seed George Washington volleyball team twice rallied from a one-set deficit to force a decisive fifth frame, but was unable to complete the comeback as No. 1 seed Dayton advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship match with a 3-2 semifinal win on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center. Set scores were 23-25, 25-19, 17-25, 25-21, 9-15.
GW concludes the season with 21 victories, the second consecutive season and third time in five years with 20+ victories. The win total is also the 24th time in program history the Colonials have eclipsed 20 wins.
Sophomore Aaliya Davidson led the Colonials with 14 kills and added 12 digs for her fourth career double-double on Saturday. Junior Chidima Osuchukwu, an Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection, also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 blocks (five solo, six assists).
The five solo rejections were a career-high mark for Osuchukwu, who concludes the season as the Atlantic 10 leader with 168 total blocks, 1.51 blocks per set and 43 solo rejections.
Senior Jordan Timmer was the third Colonial to tally a double-double with 43 assists and 15 digs. She concludes her career ranked seventh on GW's career list with 2,758 assists. The Atlantic 10 leader in both total assists and assists per set, Timmer's 1,306 helpers this season are the fourth most in a single season in program history.
Senior Maddy Doyle, the A-10 leader in both total digs and digs per set this season, passed 18 digs in her collegiate finale to bring her career total to 1,682, the second-highest total in program history. Additionally, Doyle's total of 511 digs this season is the fourth-highest total in a single season, behind only Candace Silva-Martin, who owns the top three spots on the single-season list.
The two teams battled through nine ties and six lead changes in the first set before Dayton (24-5) pulled away late for a 25-23 win. The Colonials responded in a dominant second set, limiting the Flyers to a .029 (9k-8e-34a) attack percentage en route to a match-tying 25-19 win.
Dayton rebounded with a 25-17 win in the third set to pull ahead, 2-1, in the match but the Colonials refused to back down and fought off a late rally to win, 25-21, in the fourth and force a decisive fifth set.
Dayton opened the fifth on an 8-1 run and held off the Colonials down the stretch to extend its national-best win streak to 22 consecutive matches with a 15-9 win.
Freshman Hanna Justesen had a standout match for the Colonials, finishing with nine kills (.207) and a season-high 16 digs in addition to one assist and one service ace.
The Flyers will face Saint Louis in Sunday's championship match at 2:30 p.m. The No. 2-seeded Billikens easily dispatched of No. 3 Rhode Island, 3-0, in the second semifinal match on Saturday evening.
