FAIRFAX, Va. â€" The George Washington volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to sweep Revolutionary Rival and Atlantic 10 foe George Mason, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Patriots' Recreation and Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-23, 25-22, 25-14.
GW (18-8, 7-3 A-10) had four players with at least five kills en route to its fifth victory in its last six matches. Sophomore Aaliya Davidson tallied a match-high 11 kills, while senior Maggie Skjelbred had eight against just two attack errors for a .353 attack percentage.
Senior Jordan Timmer posted a double-double with 28 assists and 11 digs, and senior Maddy Doyle passed a match-high 17 digs.
The Colonials forced 20 attack errors in the match, holding the Patriots (9-16, 3-7 A-10) to a .063 attack percentage (27k-20e-111a) across the three sets.
GW broke a 2-2 tie with three straight points to go up 5-2 in the first set, and the teams alternated the next four points until Mason used a 5-0 spurt to take a 9-7 lead. The teams then traded the next six points before GW went on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 21-15 lead. The Patriots responded with four in a row and eight of the next 11 points to pull within one at 24-23 and force a GW timeout, but a kill by Davidson gave GW a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Patriots held an early 2-1 advantage in the second set before five straight points for GW gave the Colonials the lead for good, 6-2. A 3-0 spurt for Mason made it a one-point game at 6-5, but GW used a 9-3 run to break the set open at 15-8. The Patriots did not give in, however, using an 11-4 run of their own to tie the match at 22-22, but three straight points for GW, including consecutive kills by freshman Hanna Justesen and sophomore Kristel Moor, gave the Colonials the 25-22 win and a 2-0 advantage in the match.
GW's defense limited the Patriots to just five kills and a .000 attack percentage in the third set en route to a 25-14 rout. The Colonials opened the set with a 12-4 run and used another 5-1 spurt to make it 18-8. Mason never got closer than seven points the rest of the way, as the Colonials clinched the set and the match by scoring five of the final six points.
With the win, GW earns another point in the Revolutionary Rivalry. The Colonials currently hold a 5-1 advantage.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they visit league-leading Dayton at 7 p.m.
