GW Volleyball Rallies for 3-2 Win at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - Four players finished with double-digit kills as the George Washington volleyball team rallied from a 2-1 deficit to knock off VCU, 3-2, on Friday night at the Siegel Center. Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-12.
GW (12-5, 2-0 A-10) has now won three matches in a row, including its first two conference games of the season, and 11 of its last 13.
Junior Chidima Osuchukwu led the balanced offensive effort with a match-high 19 kills on a .333 attack percentage and six block assists.
Freshman Hanna Justesen recorded her second consecutive double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs while freshman Kelsey Clark and senior Maggie Skjelbred each added 12 winners. Clark hit .391 and added four digs and three blocks (one solo, two assists) while Skjelbred swung .357 with one block assist.
The Colonials hit .200 (14k-6e-40a) and converted a match-high 77-percent (17-of-22) of sideout point opportunities en route to a 25-21 win in the first set. With the score tied, 6-6, GW used a 4-0 run to build a four-point advantage. VCU (6-11, 0-3 A-10) was unable to get within two points the rest of the way as the Colonials took a 1-0 lead.
The teams battled through 10 ties and five lead changes before VCU pulled away for a 25-21 win in the second set. With the frame tied 18-18, VCU used a 7-3 run down the stretch to knot the match at 1-1.
The Rams overcame an early deficit in the third set and committed just four attack errors en route to a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match
GW's defense stepped up in the fourth set, allowing just nine kills while recording three team blocks and 15 digs. The Colonials faced a two-point deficit at 10-8 but scored seven consecutive points to build a 15-10 lead. The Rams got to within three points of the lead at 17-14, but GW closed on an 8-3 run to tie the match at 2-2 with a 25-17 win
The fifth set featured four ties and two lead changes before the Colonials clinched the win with a 15-12 victory. With the score tied at 11-11, the Colonials closed on a 4-1 run to complete the comeback
Senior Jordan Timmer tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 44 assists and 13 digs while junior Emily Clemens added 11 helpers.
Senior Maddy Doyle contributed a team-high 13 digs in addition to a service ace, one of six aces the Colonials tallied on the evening.
GW continues its road trip on Sunday when it visits Davidson at 1 p.m.
