GW Golf Surges in Second Round at Patriot Intercollegiate

LORTON, Va. - GW golf fired the lowest team score of the second round with a 1-over-par 285 to climb into fourth place after Day 1 of George Mason's Patriot Intercollegiate at Laurel Hill Golf Club on Sunday.
After opening with a 12-over 296 team total on Sunday morning, the Colonials matched the seventh-best team score in program history at 285 in the afternoon to improve three spots and pull within 11 shots of first day leader Missouri (+2, 282-288).
Marshall (+5, 286-287) and Seton Hall (+12, 290-290) complete the top three, while GW holds a one-shot lead on James Madison (+14, 290-292) and Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's (+14, 289-293) in the top six heading into Monday's final round of the 17-team, 104-player tournament held on Laurel Hill's par-71, 7,010-yard layout.
Senior Jack Persons totaled eight birdies on Sunday - four in each round - and is in a five-way tie for ninth place at 1-over 143 (72-71), three shots behind leader Connor Walters of James Madison at 2-under 140 (68-72).
Freshman Zack Bailey, making his collegiate debut at the event, followed up his opening 4-over 75 with a 1-under 70 and is tied for 20th at 3-over 145. Junior Steve Piela, competing as an individual, is also tied for 20th after amassing seven birdies en route to consistent rounds of 1-over 72 and 2-over 73.
Sophomore Lucas Farmer (73-75) and rookie Vince Palazzolo (76-72) are part of a 16-player logjam for 32nd at 6-over 148. Palazzolo made six birdies on Sunday, including four during a second round 1-over 72, while Farmer converted five birdies, including three in an opening 2-over 73.
Sophomore Michael Heda made his season debut with an 8-over 79, but rebounded with four birdies during a second round 1-over 72 and is tied for 57th at 9-over 151.
Playing as individuals, junior Michael Helton is tied for 79th at 14-over 156 (78-78), classmate Pierre Tillement is in 92nd at 17-over 159 (76-83), and freshman Jack Porcelli is tied for 101st at 27-over 169 (83-86).
GW will play in Monday's final four-team pairings along with Missouri, Marshall and Seton Hall off the front nine beginning at 9:55 a.m. The Colonials' four individuals will begin play on the back nine starting at 8:55 a.m.
