HANOVER, N.H. - Facing an 18-boat fleet loaded with many of the top women's teams in the nation, GW sailing posted a 16th-place finish at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl hosted by Dartmouth on Mascoma Lake.
GW peaked as high as 12th following Saturday's racing before settling on 16th amongst a tight group of finishers between 10th and 16th place over the event's 18 races. Only 53 points separated 10th-place Harvard (353) and the Colonials (406), while Coast Guard (205) posted a 49-point victory ahead of runner-up Bowdoin (254).
"The competition was excellent as we expected it would be. It was good experience for our women's competitors to start the year off on a high level against top competition," said Head Coach John Pearce. "If we could have been more consistent, we could have easily jumped up around the top 10."
The A Division freshman duo of India Johnstone and Belle Strachan recorded six top-10 showings, peaking at second in Race 13, to place 17th. In B Division, junior Maria Sinagra and sophomore Gabriella Malek posted seven top-10 finishes and five top-5's, highlighted by a victory in Race 17, en route to 13th.
GW also hosted its second annual Alumni Regatta on the Potomac River on Saturday afternoon, welcoming back 16 alumni from the program's club and varsity past. "It was a beautiful day for racing on Saturday, it was great to have our alums back on campus, on the Potomac and showing support for what we hope to grow into one of the best sailing programs in the nation," noted Pearce.
The Colonials will race at a pair of conference Laser events and an interconference coed regatta next weekend, Sept. 27-28. Sophomore Daniel DelBello and freshmen Taylor Brimberg and Kia Olsson will travel to Annapolis, Maryland for the MAISA Laser Second Chance Qualifier and MAISA Women's Singlehanded Championships, respectively, while the team will also send sailors to the St. Mary's Interconference in St. Mary's City, Maryland.
