The inaugural Hometown Heroes Day will take place on Saturday and feature a special pregame Heroes Tailgate in the Barcroft Park parking lot beginning at 11:30 a.m. Fans will be able to enjoy an up-close look at various emergency response vehicles on site prior to a special pregame ceremony that will recognize local heroes.
On Sunday, the Colonials will honor seniors Owen Beightol, Aaron Weisberg, Colin Milon, Luke Staub, Taylor Lambke and Craig LeJeune prior to the series finale for their years of dedication and service to the baseball program. The six student-athletes have helped the Colonials to 80 overall victories, including 37 wins in the Atlantic 10, entering the weekend and played a big part in GW's return to the Atlantic 10 Championship last season.
GW (15-29, 7-14 A-10) is still alive for a berth in the Atlantic 10 Championship but needs to win each of its last six games in addition to receiving help elsewhere in the conference.
Beightol enters the weekend in a chase for the Atlantic 10 batting title. The Richmond, Virginia native leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with a .360 batting average. He is also tied for third in the A-10 with 59 hits and tied for fifth with 13 doubles.
Beightol will conclude his career at GW in the top-10 of the GW baseball record book in games played (207 entering weekend), at-bats (768) and hits (228). Additionally, he is just three RBIs short of 100 for his career and would become the 23rd player in program history to reach the century mark.
Junior Ryan Xepoleas ranks second on the team in batting at a .339 clip. He leads the Colonials with 23 RBIs this season in addition to 11 doubles, three triples, two home runs and eight stolen bases.
Weisberg and Milon are also working their way up the all-time lists in career pitching categories. Weisberg enters the weekend with 42 games started as a pitcher (T-5th all-time), 64 appearances (T-10th) and 12 victories (T-21st) while Milon is currently tied for fifth all-time with 78 appearances and tied for 13th with six saves.
