WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team resumes Atlantic 10 Conference play with a three-game series against league newcomer George Mason this weekend at Barcroft Park.
GW (7-18, 1-5 A-10) split the 2013 season series with George Mason (15-9, 3-1 A-10), winning 11-9 on April 2 in Farifax, Va., and falling, 6-5, on April 30 at Barcroft Park. The Patriots lead the all-time series 59-38.
The Colonials are coming off a pair of midweek losses to Georgetown and No. 1 Virginia.
Senior Owen Beightol continues to pace GW's offense, leading the team in batting average (.307), runs scored (14) and home runs (2) while tying for the team lead in doubles (6) and RBIs (9).
As a team, GW has totaled the least amount of offensive strikeouts in the Atlantic 10 this season with 105. On the mound, GW's pitchers have posted a team ERA of 4.83, which ranks sixth in the conference.
The Colonials remain one of just two teams in Division I, along with Austin Peay, to start at least seven freshman position players in at least half of their 2014 games.
George Mason boasts the top pitching staff in the Atlantic 10 with a team ERA of 2.83. Two of the Patriots' weekend starters, Jared Gaynor and Anthony Montefusco, have sub 1.00-ERAs and have combined to strike out 77 batters against 22 walks.
With a series victory, GW would give the Colonials a 7-6 advantage in the overall team standings of the inaugural Revolutionary Rivalry, an annual competition between the new A-10 rivals separated by less than 20 miles.
