WASHINGTON - The George Washington baseball team, winners of four of its past six games, will host UMBC on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Barcroft Park before visiting UMES on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Hawk Stadium in a pair of midweek games.
GW (11-23) won two-of-three games from Massachusetts this weekend at Barcroft Park for its second consecutive Atlantic 10 series victory.
After falling by a score of 6-4 in game one, the Colonials notched a pair of come-from-behind victories in the last two games of the series. On Saturday, GW scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn a 3-2 victory before scoring three times in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday for a 5-4, walkoff victory.
Junior Ryan Xepoleas extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games on Sunday, the longest active streak in the Atlantic 10, and batted .500 (5-for-10) one home run and four RBIs over the three-game series. During the past 11 games, the Del Oro, Calif., native is batting .436 (17-of-39) with five runs, one double, one triple, one home run and 11 RBIs. He has also hit safely in 19 of his past 20 games.
Xepoleas currently leads the Colonials with 20 RBIs while ranking second with a .333 batting average, 10 doubles and three triples.
Senior Owen Beightol leads GW in a number of offensive categories including batting average (.346), slugging percentage (.485), on-base percentage (.403), runs (23), doubles (12), home runs (2) and walks (12). Beightol carries an eight-game hitting streak into Tuesday's games and is batting .567 (17-of-30) during the run with eight runs, five doubles and four RBIs.
GW remains just one of two programs in Division I to start at least seven freshmen position players in half of its 36 games to date.
GW will resume Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a three-game series at Richmond, beginning on Friday.
