MERION STATION, Pa. - The George Washington softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-5 in the nightcap after dropping the opener, 11-0.
GW (16-26-1, 2-8 A-10) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game on a one-out two-run home run by sophomore Morgan Matetic, her team-best sixth of the season. The Hawks, however, scored five in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.
Saint Joseph's (16-16, 6-4 A-10) added single runs in the second and third to make it 7-2 before the Colonials scored twice in the fourth to pull within three. A pair of infield singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners for Matetic, who drove in one run with a groundout, and junior Victoria Valos plated another with an RBI single to left field.
The Colonials tacked on a run in the seventh when freshman Bradleigh Breland walked, stole second and scored on a single by classmate Marissa Mangini to make it 7-5.
Sophomore Meghan Rico (12-13) took the loss, while Anna Lauterbach (3-2) picked up the win for Saint Joseph's and Emily Rogers earned the save.
Earlier in the day, Liz Mendez (7-9) tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the Hawks beat the Colonials, 11-0. Senior Courtney Martin (4-11) took the loss for GW.
Freshman Megan Linn was hit by a pitch in the opener and reached base in three of five plate appearances in the second game to extend her program-record on-base streak to 23 straight games since March 11.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday when they visit District rival Georgetown at 7 p.m. in their non-conference finale.
