WASHINGTON - The second-year varsity GW sailing program claimed its first-ever regatta titles last weekend with first-place finishes at the Christopher Newport Women's Regatta and William & Mary Open.
GW sailed away from the six-boat fleet at the CNU Women's event, totaling 30 points to post a 32-point triumph over the runner-up boat from the host Captains. "It was a smaller event, but otherwise good to see our younger sailors get the win," said second-year Head Coach John Pearce.
The A Division of Alex Hitchcock and Gabriella Marki won nine of 12 races and placed first with 14 points, while the B Division of Madison Oleson and Kelly Dong won eight of 12 races to finish first with 16 points.
GW's Buff and Blue boat also cruised to a comfortable win at the William & Mary Open, turning a three-point advantage after seven races on Saturday into a 29-point margin over runner-up Syracuse through 10 races in a nine-boat fleet. "Both regatta wins show our depth as a team, and shows that our whole team is sailing really hard and really well," said Coach Pearce.
The Buff and Blue's A Division of Jay Spector and Henry Young won half of the 10 races and finished with 23 points, while the B Division of Benjamin Helfand and Darius Homayuni also won five races en route to 19 points.
A Colonials boat also raced at the William & Mary Open, sailing to fourth with 81 points sparked by four race victories and 23 points from B Division duo William Broman and Jennifer Wilson.
GW also had entries in the competitive Graham Hall Team Race in Annapolis, Md., and St. Mary's Women's Intersectional in St. Mary's City, Md. The Colonials finished in 16th out of 18 teams at the St. Mary's Intersectional, and placed 16th of 16 teams with an 0-15 team-race record at the Graham Hall.
The St. Mary's Intersectional was highlighted by a four-race flurry by Maria Sinagra and Kaitlin Denney, who finished 3-3-2-3 in Races 5-8 en route to 13th place in B Division. "We struggled with consistency, but enjoyed a minor hot streak and continue to make progress," added Coach Pearce.
GW returns to Newport News, Va., for CJ's Regatta and will compete in its final team race of the season at the MAISA Challenge in Geneva, N.Y., in two weekends on March 29-30.
