NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - George Washington softball junior Victoria Valos was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and freshman Megan Linn was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Week for games played from March 10-16, the conference announced on Monday.
Valos hit a team-best .520 (13-for-25) with eight RBIs and six runs scored to lead GW to a 6-1 week. Eight of her 13 hits went for extra bases (six doubles, two home runs) as she slugged 1.000 for the week, and she also stole two bases. Valos had at least one hit in all seven games with five multi-hit efforts.
Valos went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored in the second game of the Mount St. Mary's doubleheader on Tuesday. In the first game of the Capital Invitational on Friday, she was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored against Saint Francis, and she followed with a 3-for-4 effort against Manhattan. The next day, she again went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run against the Red Flash, and she moved into sole possession of second place all-time at GW with 25 career long balls.
Valos ended the weekend with a 2-for-3 effort against Brown, recording the 104th RBI of her career to break the program's all-time record.
A junior from Bakersfield, Calif., Valos raised her season average nearly 100 points on the week, as she is now batting .338 on the year and leads the Colonials with 10 doubles.
The Player of the Week award is the second of Valos' career after also earning the honor on April 15, 2013. She is just the third Colonial ever to receive multiple Player of the Week accolades, joining Jackie Yaniga ('08) and former teammate Autumn Taylor ('13). In addition, Valos is the first GW softball player to be named A-10 Player of the Week since Taylor on April 22, 2013.
Linn batted .440 (11-for-25) with a team-high nine RBIs and six runs scored in seven games, and she had five stolen bases in five attempts. The freshman from Corona, Calif., also slugged .640 with two doubles and a home run, and she had two sacrifice flies and four multi-hit games on the week.
Linn hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift GW to a 10-8 win over Saint Francis in the Capital Invitational opener on Friday and finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs in the game. She went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs against Manhattan on Saturday, and she also had two hits against Saint Francis on Saturday and Brown on Sunday, scoring twice against the Bears in the Capital Invite finale.
For the season, Linn is hitting a team-high .365 and also leads the Colonials with 31 hits, 20 RBIs and 20 runs scored.
Linn is the second straight GW freshman to be named A-10 Rookie of the Week, as Mary Wiley received the award last week.
Valos, Linn and the Colonials return to action on Thursday when they host Colgate for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
