HAMMOND, La. - The George Washington baseball team rallied with six runs in the eighth inning, but was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to Southeastern Louisiana, 14-9, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The two teams combined for 23 runs and 27 hits, but GW (1-2) could not complete the comeback after yielding nine runs through the first three innings of play.
Down 9-0 in the fourth inning, senior Owen Beightol put the Colonials on the scoreboard with a solo home run over the left field wall, the 10th long ball of his career.
Southeastern Louisiana (4-2) added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to extend the lead to 14-1 before the Colonials mounted a comeback in the final three frames.
In the seventh, junior Ryan Xepoleas delivered an RBI single to score Jon Steele and make the score 14-2.
The Colonials exploded for six runs in the eighth inning. Beightol started the rally with a one-out base hit and advanced to second when freshman Kevin Mahala singled to right field. Steele then singled to left field to load the bases and sophomore Andy Young lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 14-3. Freshman Cody Bryant followed with an infield RBI single to make the score 14-3.
Freshman Joey Bartosic followed with a single to load the bases, then Xeploeas delivered a bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to 14-6. Xepoleas would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 14-7.
An RBI ground out by Steele would be the eighth and final run for the Colonials as Southeastern Louisiana retired the side in the ninth to clinch the win.
Xepoleas finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored while Beightol, Steele and Bryant added two hits apiece.
The Colonials and Lions conclude the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET. RHP Jacob Williams will get the start for GW against Kyle Keller.
