KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Freshman Vince Palazzolo and junior Michael Helton combined for 10 birdies and carded rounds of even-par 72 and 1-over 73, respectively, to lead GW golf on the final day of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic on Tuesday.
Helton and Palazzolo's play, along with freshman Jack Porcelli's final round 3-over 75, helped the Colonials to a 17-over 305 team total on Tuesday and 14th-place finish out of 20 teams at 40-over 904. The 40-over 904 total is the team's best in five consecutive appearances at the Kiawah Classic held on the par-72, 7,061-yard Turtle Point Golf Course.
Palazzolo (81-75-72--228) and Porcelli (82-71-75--228) posted the top finishes for GW as the pair tied for 55th at 12-over 228. Palazzolo made five birdies, including four for an outward 2-under 34, en route to his 72 on Tuesday and tied for 11th in the 108-player field with 11 total birdies.
Senior Jack Persons opened Tuesday's play with his sixth birdie-or-better to go to 1-over for the tournament, but closed with a 13-over 85 to tie for 70th at 15-over 231 (74-72-85). Sophomore Michael Heda also carded a 13-over 85 on Tuesday and tied for 79th at 18-over 234 (75-74-85).
Helton recorded five birdies during his final round 1-over 73 and improved 10 spots into a tie for 84th at 19-over 235 (77-85-73).
Winthrop won the team title at even-par 864 (288-295-281), fending off late-charging runner-up Georgia Southern by four shots. USC Upstate's Ryan Cornfield and Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes shared medalist honors at 6-under 210, with Wolfes setting a Turtle Point course record with a 9-under 63 in Tuesday's final round.
GW finishes the fall season with a 300.2 team scoring average over five events and 15 rounds, the lowest for the program since averaging 299.3 over seven events and 17 rounds in fall 2008.
The Colonials will return to action in spring 2015 at Atlantic 10 newcomer Davidson's Invitational at River Run Country Club in Davidson, North Carolina, on March 2-3.
