BRONX, N.Y. - GW sailing started strong, but battled challenging conditions en route to an 11th-place finish at the War Memorial MAISA Coed Conference Championship hosted by SUNY Maritime on Long Island Sound.
The Colonials started with a fourth and second in A and B Division, respectively, but couldn't maintain that momentum against the 18-boat fleet and conditions that allowed just eight A Division and six B Division races on Saturday, and only two B Division races on Sunday. GW finished with 163 points over eight races, 32 points outside the top-seven placement needed to qualify for the Atlantic Coast Championship.
"We never really got into a good rhythm, especially with only a couple of races on Sunday," said Head Coach John Pearce. "We learned some things this weekend that we can take forward to our final fall events."
The Colonials' coed team will now compete in the Atlantic Coast Tournament in Geneva, New York, on Nov. 15-16, one of three final regattas of the fall along with the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship that same weekend and sophomore Brendan Shanahan competing at the ICSA Singlehanded National Championship in Bellingham, Washington, on Nov. 8-9.
Georgetown captured the coed conference title with 61 points, while Fordham, SUNY Maritime, Old Dominion, Navy, St. Mary's and Merchant Marine rounded out the top-seven finishers to earn a spot in the Atlantic Coast Championship.
GW's A Division quintet of skippers Shanahan and freshman Kai Friesecke and crews Miranda Bakos, Matthew Ricci and Henry Young posted four top-10's and finished 13th with 91 points. The B Division quintet of freshman skipper Roger Dorr and sophomore skipper Daniel DelBello and crews Belle Strachan, Bakos and Young registered six top 10's and placed ninth with 72 points.
