CAMBRIDGE, Mass. & GENEVA, N.Y. - GW sailing completed a banner fall season this past weekend at the Atlantic Coast Tournament on Seneca Lake in Upstate New York and the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship on the Charles River near Boston.
The Colonials finished a fall in which they earned their first-ever national rankings and received a new 18-boat fleet with a fifth-place effort at the ACT and an 18th-place showing at Women's ACCs.
GW amassed 143 points over 11 races to place fifth out of 15 teams at the ACT, improving three spots on last fall's eighth-place finish. Host Hobart and William Smith captured the event with 58 points, followed by Brown (94), Coast Guard (96) and Boston University (128).
The B Division of freshman Kai Friesecke and senior Meagan Murphy won Race 3 and had eight top-five races to come in third with 46 points, while the A Division of sophomore Brendan Shanahan and freshman Miranda Bakos sailed to ninth with 97 points.
At the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship hosted by MIT, GW totaled 459 points over 18 races against an 18-boat fleet that featured 11 ranked women's teams No. 2 Navy captured the crown with 219 points, holding off runner-up No. 5 Dartmouth by 27 points.
The rookie duo of India Johnstone and Belle Strachan placed 12th in B Division with 190 points, posting eight top-10 finishes including third in Race 3. The A Division pair of Hannah McNomee and Jennifer Wilson peaked at eighth in Race 5 and totaled 269 points.
"Generally, we didn't have it all put together this weekend, which is humbling going into the offseason, but we'll use it as a learning experience and hopefully it will be a motivating factor as we do our training to get ready for the spring," said Head Coach John Pearce.
GW's spring schedule will be announced in the coming weeks, but will include the program's first hosted regatta on March 7-8, 2015.
