GW Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kelsey Newman led the team in kills for the second straight match but the George Washington volleyball team was unable to extend its winning streak, falling at VCU, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Siegel Center. Set scores were 20-25, 22-25, 20-25.
GW (14-6, 5-2 A-10) hit .054 (29k-23e-111a) in the match, while VCU (12-9, 5-2 A-10) had two players post double-digit kills while swinging .204 (45k-23e-108a) as a team.
The Colonials held an early 12-10 lead in the first set but the Rams scored six straight points to build a four-point advantage and did not trail again before posting a 25-20 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
GW built a two-point lead at 17-15 midway through the second set on the strength of a 6-1 run. However, VCU responded with a 9-2 run to force set point at 24-19. The Colonials attempted a late comeback with three consecutive points but the Rams clinched the set and took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 win.
The third set featured five ties and three lead changes but VCU clinched the sweep with a 25-20 victory.
Newman led GW with eight kills, eight digs and two block assists while sophomore Chidima Osuchukwu finished with seven kills and five block assists.
The Colonials continue their stretch of five consecutive matches on the road next weekend with visits to La Salle (Fri., 7 p.m.) and Duquesne (Sun., 1 p.m).
